Want to learn more or share what you’ve already investigated about these things? Or do you just want to learn more about maps and Maptime? Then please join us! Bring along your laptop!

Maptime is a collection of beginner-focused community groups for learning geospatial technology, techniques, and concepts, particularly using open source tools and hands-on practice and exercises. If you’ve ever dreamt of mapping the world around you, this event is for you.

‘Driving the Windsor-Essex Automotive Industry’ Featuring Our Very Own

C’Mon Get Mappy for Global GIS Day with Hackforge

maptimeThis Wednesday, November 19th marks Global GIS (global information systems) Day and Hackforge wants Windsor to get mappy! A Maptime event will be at the Hackforge headquarters at the front of the Windsor Public Library (850 Ouellette Ave) from 7 to 9PM.

Maptime is a collection of beginner-focused community groups for learning geospatial technology, techniques, and concepts, particularly using open source tools and hands-on practice and exercises. This is the second meeting of Maptime Windsor-Essex. If you’ve ever dreamt of mapping the world around you, this event is for you.

We’re pleased to have two speakers: Jason Pomerleau will giving a demo of TileMill/Carto CSS and Felix Brun will introduce us to Boundless’ OpenGeoSuite.

Hackforge 3D Printing at the Tech Show

This Tuesday, November 4th was the Windsor-Essex Tech Show, presented by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. Businesses, organizations, and schools from around the region came to exhibit.

Hackforge demonstrated the power of 3D printing to participants and gave breakout sessions throughout the day discussing how the technology is already revolutionizing business.

Big thanks to Amber Kouvalis, Paul Anderson, and a special shoutout to Kevin Roy for saving the day and bringing his personal 3D printer to demonstrate.

Fishing with Aliens and Animals: HackWE 3.0 is a Wrap!

Sunday, October 26th, participants gathered for the final time for HackWE 3.0 at the Green Bean Cafe. They demonstrated their projects to judges and the public.

Two student teams and two professional teams competed. Students Meghan O’Donnell and Meagan Park discussed their work using endangered species data. Student Jason Ly talked about how he used data on the water quality of the Detroit River. Parallel 42, one of our professional teams, presented “What’s in the Water,” sports fishing consumption advisory, water quality information web app. Team Bison brought bison migration to life with the help of some alien friends in a real time visualization.

Judges were Bob Price, Analyst Programmer for the City of Windsor; Renee Pare, Sales Director for Next Dimension; Frank Abbruzzese, President of AlphaKOR Group; and Heather Pratt, Executive Director, Research & Innovation, University of Windsor.

Results:
Student Team Meghan O’Donnell & Meagan Park: Best Student Project
Pro Team Parallel 42: Best Professional Project and Best Use of Science Data
Pro Team Bison: Most Creative Project

Student team Jason Ly won the Smartwatch, sponsored by Next Dimension.

HackWE 3.0 is in partnership with the University of Windsor, EPICentre, St. Clair College, Open Data Windsor Essex, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE) and Next Dimension.
