Get stylin’ with CSS! This styling sheet language works with HTML to bring design, layout, and variation of display. This class is designed for professional women, created by and taught by women.

w.a.v.e.s Festival Info Session for Makers and Artists
February 10: 4:30 – 6:30PM
Hackforge, in partnership with the City of Windsor, hosts a free drop-in information session for makers and artists applying to w.a.v.e.s Festival 2016.
The session will cover how to apply for funding for installations and projects, creative examples from w.a.v.e.s 2014 and questions and answers from the festival organizer. Deadline for application is March 31st.

“Write Your First Line Of Code” Day

On Saturday, January 30th, Hackforge (255 Ouellette) invites the people of Windsor to write their first line of code. From 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, people can drop into the space, sit with a programmer at a computer and type out a few instructions in a coding language. This event is free and family friendly event.

This event aims to expose those outside the tech industry to the vast world of computer science. The goal is to demystify coding, meet programmers, and give some insight into how programming helps builds the world around us. For those looking to learn more, the day will also offer an Intro to HTML class for women and Hands-on With Ruby on Rails class.

9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Throughout the day, come by Hackforge to write your first line of code! Sit with a professional computer programmer for 5 minutes and learn some basics before you write out your first command.

As you stop in, check out the demo of this exciting technology by our friends at Kelcom 3D Printing.

Software Guild’s Hands-on with Ruby on Rails Workshop
12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Bring your laptop down and start learning Ruby on Rails right from the beginning. We’ll take you through the process of creating an app like Twitter with one of the easiest platforms around for learning and getting a web-app up and running quickly.
Registration is required – Previous HTML knowledge preferred – Bring your own Laptop!

Bring the kids down so they can try out some kid-friendly coding exercises and get their face painted!

Computer Girls’ Free Intro to HTML Class for Women

Ever wanted to learn to code? This free class will give you an intro to HTML, the basic language used to create web pages. Designed for working women and taught by professional female developers, this class will help you get started in the world of coding. This program is brought to you by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Maptime Windsor: Missing Maps

Maptime Windsor is looking at the Missing Maps project. The goal of this project is to map the most vulnerable places in the developing world, in order that international and local NGOs, and individuals can use the maps and data to better respond to crises affecting the areas.

Missing Maps is a global initiative and everyone from beginners to experts can help map. Whether you are coming to contribute or just learn more, Maptime is for everyone!

Hackforge Movie Night: The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters (2007)  CANCELLED

In the cutthroat world of Donkey Kong, only one can rule. Join us for the documentary about die-hard gamers compete to break world records on classic arcade games.

Hackforge movie nights help raise funds for our programming and space. These nights are free for members and $10 for everyone else. Pop and snacks included! Rated PG-13.

Designed for working women and taught by professional developers, this class is a preview to the coding series for women we’re relaunching in January.

Video Game Career Day for Teens

Do you love video games? Wonder what it’s like to create games? Can you imagine a career inspired by your love of gaming?

During the Christmas break, Hackforge is inviting teens to a Career Day around video games. Each speaker will give a short presentation on their job, projects they’ve worked on, education/experience needed, and how video games fit into their work. Some speakers work behind the scenes building video games and others have jobs that use the skills you can find in gaming, like robotics and design.

Computer Girls Facilitator Assistant
Hours: Flexible part time
Computer Girls offers computer training to women and young women in the Windsor & Essex County area at no cost. These classes are made possible through a partnership between Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) and Hackforge, with support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Job description:
The two streams of classes teach computer coding and basic computer skills to women. The Computer Girls Facilitator Assistant will be helping the main Facilitator with program development, teaching, and outreach. This person will work both with Hackforge and Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in instructing coding and basic computer skills classes for women
  • Promote the classes in the community through social media
  • Seek out partners in the community
  • Help develop further curriculum for the program
  • Recruit women in the IT sector to instruct classes

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of computer basics
  • Computer programming experience
  • Strong ability with HTML / CSS / Javascript are an important asset
  • Experience working in a team and taking initiative
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Teaching experience is an asset
